NSS UNIT – BONAIGARH COLLEGE

About NSS

The National Service Scheme (NSS) was launched on 24th September 1969, the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi, to promote the idea of social service among students and to encourage their involvement in nation-building activities. Gandhi believed that students must contribute to society and understand the realities of rural life—this vision became the foundation of NSS.

The scheme was first recommended by the Education Commission (Kothari Commission, 1964–66), which emphasized the need for student participation in community development. Later, the idea gained support through the 132nd meeting of the Vice-Chancellors’ Conference, where universities agreed that social service should be an essential part of higher education.

NSS was officially introduced in 37 universities across India with 40,000 volunteers during its first year. Over time, it expanded rapidly due to its impact on youth leadership, discipline, and community transformation.

Today, NSS operates under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India and has grown into one of the largest youth movements in the world, with over 38 lakh volunteers working across universities, colleges, and higher secondary institutions.

The programme continues to inspire young individuals to uphold the motto “Not Me, But You”, serving the nation with compassion, responsibility, and dedication.

The National Service Scheme (NSS) of Bonaigarh College is dedicated to shaping socially responsible, disciplined, and service-oriented youth. Operated under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, NSS encourages students to participate in community development, environmental protection, and nation-building activities. Guided by the motto “Not Me, But You”, NSS encourages selfless service, social responsibility, and leadership development.
